Fleischman Planetarium - The planetarium is located 1.5 miles north of downtown Reno on Virginia Street. It's on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno., and is located: 1.5 miles north of downtown Reno on Virginia Street. For information and reservations, call (775) 784-4811. The cost of admission for adults is $5, and $3.50 for children under 12 and seniors over 60. The complex has a museum and gift shop, plus exhibits on space and astronomy. Free telescope viewings are available from 8:30-9:30 p.m. every clear Friday night.

Places to Visit & Things to Do

Virginia City - If you visit the Reno area, you're really missing out if you don't go to Virginia City too.
M.S. Dixie II - Lake Tahoe is GORGEOUS! Cruise Lake Tahoe on this neat glass bottom paddlewheeler! They have both daytime cruises and sunset dinner dance cruises.
Thunderbird Lodge - On Wednesdays and Thursdays, one hour tours run every half hour from 9am - 1130am and at 1pm and 130pm for $22 (adults) and $12 (children under 12). Sunday tours depart at 8am and at 930am and cost $60. You'll probably want to take the Sunday tour if possible because you get to arrive at the mansion by way of a catamaran which takes you across Crystal Bay from the Hyatt Regency to the lodge. The weekday tours bring visitors in via shuttle buses.
The Pioneer Center For The Performing Arts - Home of Broadway Comes To Reno, The Reno Philharmonic, Nevada Opera and other great events.
Sierra Nevada Helicopters - Enjoy spectacular views of the Reno and Lake Tahoe area from a helicopter!
The National Bowling Stadium
Rustic Cottages Resort - Eighteen Old Tahoe style cottages with private baths located on two acres at North Lake Tahoe's scenic Tahoe Vista. Each cottage has a microwave, mini-fridge, TV/VCR and its own deck. Many have fireplaces and kitchenettes and allow dogs. Two of the larger cottages have whirlpools. Free for guests to use are a huge video library, bikes and barbeques. You also get a continental breakfast and freshly baked chocolate chip cookies all day long.

Animal Ark - Animal Ark is a wildlife sanctuary that shelters animal that do not have the skills to survive in the wild. These animals may be permanently disabled, orphaned, confiscated, or unwanted exotic pets.
Lake Tahoe Adventures - Lake Tahoe adventures offers terrific snowmobile and jeep/aTV hummer tours of Lake Tahoe.
The Wilbur D. May Center - Located at Rancho San Rafael Park, just north of downtown Reno, it's a great place to visit when you feel like getting away from the casinos, especially if you have children. Especially check out The Great Basin Adventure, featuring a 1.5-acre farm and petting zoo, pony rides and gold panning plus you can ride an old fashioned log flume, or explore in their "touch anything" Discovery Room. The May Center also has a Museum and an Arboretum.
High Sierra Stables - Located at a private horse ranche just 10 minutes from downtown Reno and Sparks and offers scenic horseback rides that offer panoramic views of the ridges, lakes and bakc valleys of Northeast Reno. Rides are available to suit every level of ability from kids and novice riders to private rides for experienced riders. Open from 9AM to dusk year round. Sparks Marina Park - Located at the site of a former toxically contaminated mining pit. Quite a change. I like this place but still, somehow, would be reluctant to eat the fish ;)

Annual Events

Artown - Reno's annual (every July) month-long performing and visual art festival. Most events are free or low-cost.
Hot August Nights - Annual celebration of the music, cars and other memories of the 50's and 60's. First week of August.

Reno Rodeo - Known as the Wildest, Richest Rodeo in the west, the Reno Rodeo is the third largest professionally sanctioned rodeo in North America, attracting the best cowboys and cowgirls in the world. Takes place every June.
Great Reno Balloon Races - September of each year.
Street Vibrations - Three days of motorcycle tours, entertainment, ride-in shows, a parade, poker run/walk, vendors and concerts. An official event of the Harley-Davidson Dealers Association of Northern California. Every September.
National Championship Air Races and Air Show - Every September.
Virginia City Camel Races - Every September, usually the same week as the Air Races.
Eldorado Great Italian Festival - Takes place during October and features live entertainment, spaghetti sauce cook-offs, grape stomping contests, arts and crafts and lots of great Italian food.
